What is Hair Breakage and How To Stop it by Sanity Stylist Jamie Nguyen
What is Hair Breakage and how to stop it:
Hair breakage happens when the actual strand sheds. When you see split ends; it is hair that is so damaged that it begins to break and shred at the bottom of the strand. Split ends are a sign of hair breakage that needs to be trimmed to keep the strand from tearing up to the root. Shedding is a natural party of your hair cycle. You’re supposed to lose hair daily – anywhere from 50 to 100 hairs a day, to be exact. It’s fairly easy to tell if your hair is broken or shedding. Hair that has simple shed is coming straight from the follicle, so it is going to be a full strand.
What causes hair breakage?
Frequent use of heated styling tools such as blow dryers, flat irons, and curling irons can damage the hair and cause breakage. To protect the hair’s integrity always remember to use a heat protectant before heat use.
Another cause of hair breakage can be from tight hairstyles. Such as braids, cornrows, and dreadlocks, can put a lot of stress on your head, which leads to breakage.
Experiencing stress can greatly impact your overall well-being, including your hair. When we are under stress, our bodies produce a hormone known as cortisol, which can negatively affect our hair by causing it to fall our or become damaged.
How do you fix hair breakage?
Once your hair is damaged, it’s damaged. However, what you can do is start by getting a proper trim to help even out any ragged edges and prevent more breakage and damage from occurring. This is seen as the quickest solution to stopping hair breakage to eliminate really little brittle ends.
