How to Take Care of Curly Hair by Stylist Jamie Nguyen

For all the curly haired folks, while you may get all the compliments for your unique locks, you also dread taking care of it! As stylists, we understand how coarse, dry, and frizzy your hair can get. Curls can be unpredictable and very difficult to control. The difference between fighting with your curls and loving them really lies within your hair care routine. With the right products, care, and hairstyles that can make a difference in your curly hair game.

Washing your hair is the first and most important step in any hair care routine. Cleansing your hair ensures that there is no product buildup, dead skin cells, or excess oil on your scalp. You also want to avoid excessive shampooing limiting it to every 2 or 3 days. Curly hair tends to become dry very easily, and over doing it can suck out its natural moisture. Always condition the hair which ensures that the cuticle gets sealed and protected against environmental damage.

To keep your hair curly, you can use a curl cream to define the curls. Avoid using too much product as it can weigh down your hair. Hairsprays and hair gels can also keep your curly hairstyles in place.

The high temperature from heat styling tools can remove the natural texture of your curls, making them look dull and lifeless. Limit the use of heat styling and use a good heat protectant spray. Heat protectants help get your hair prepared for the heat source of your choice by using silicone compounds to coat the hair with a water-resistant and heat-protective layer.
