HOW TO ADD A LITTLE SANITY INTO THE START OF A NEW YEAR

 by Melissa Bustamante

It's getting close to that time of year when the decorations go up, the weather becomes cooler, holiday greeting cards are sent out and the toast to all of the wonderful things happen! We are surrounded with an abundance of sparkle and shine and before we blink our eyes it’s time to start thinking of our New Year’s resolutions! How do you prepare for the New Year? Do you make a resolution or is your resolution not to make a resolutionJ?!  I don’t know about you, but I have found that it’s hard for me to stick to anything that has so much pressure behind it and especially at the start of something new. Today I want to share with you a way to flip the script and get a running start on the New Year and all of the new goals you may have! They say 21 days makes a habit, but what if I told you that you would have 90 days, 60 days, 30 days whatever the amount of days you would like to begin working up to and settling into the practice of bringing in goals for the New Year!  Check out below what I do to bring a little Sanity into the start of a New Year!

Over the last 2 years, I started a new practice of how I bring in the New Year.  It all begins in October, I start reviewing my current goals and listing new ones.  I look at two specific areas in which I would like to see changes first is my professional growth and the second  area is my personal growth.  I look over my current goals and strategies, I toss around words, research meanings and see which ones I connect with and then choose a word for the year!  It is also during these last 90 days of the year that I buckle down, yes more so than I normally do and challenge myself to trying my best to keeping the promises I make to myself and committing to end the year with a powerhouse mindset and  even if I fall off track I jump right back on. I close out the last 90 days of the year by dedicating and focusing on the "Five to Thrive". These are 5 daily habits that help me tighten up the commitment I made to myself and help make stronger the habits I introduced into my life a few years ago, as well as, some new! As learned from the Hollis Co.

Wake Up- Wake up an hour earlier to establish your morning routine

Move- Move your body, change your mind. Commit to at least 30 minutes of daily movement.

Hydrate- drink half your body weight in ounces of water each day.

Release something-each month, give up something you know is keeping you from being your best self:  a food category, alcohol, social media etc.

Gratitude -Write down five things you are grateful for every single day.

When January 1 comes and goes I will have been well on my way to being fully committed to myself and my goals by reestablishing the habits to start the New Year stronger than ever!

How do I ensure success during the last 90, 60 or 30 days?  I continue to engage in my personal development practices and listen to  podcast, read weekly emails that I subscribe to, watch vlogs, continue reading books and re- watch free virtual events that have been saved on you tube.  I also keep a list of the 5 to thrive that I check off daily to keep myself accountable.  The idea is that you can get a head start and work ambitiously the last 90 days of the year just as you want to be the first 90 days of the New Year! You can do it!

"Don't bother just to be better than your contemporaries or predecessors. Try to be better than yourself."  -William Faulkner-
