How to protect your blonde color treated hair by Melissa
Bustamante
When I hear the words summer time I think of the smell of
suntan lotion, barbecues, Kenny Chesney’s
“Summertime”, fireflies,
vacation, sun kissed bodies and beach
hair don’t care!!! Every summer has a story what is your hair going to tell
about yours?
Doesn’t it seem that during this time of year we always take
extra measures to keep and protect our skin from sun damage and our bodies
hydrated, but we rarely hear talk about keeping our hair protected? During the
summer time we are harder on our hair due to the time we spend in the sun, to
the time we spend splashing around in the pool or at the beach. Chlorine and salt water work to strip moisture
away from your hair causing things like split ends and breakage, taking away
shine and vibrancy leaving your hair to appear dull and lackluster. Did you
know that the UVA/UVB rays break down your melanin causing damage to your hair
and allow it to look dry and brassy? UV rays break down the color toner
molecules that keep your color pure and lively. Also, color treated hair is
more susceptible to protein and lipid layer damage since our hair can become
dehydrated from color treatments. So, by now you’re probably thinking, what is it that I need to do to help protect
my blonde hair, we have the answers that you’re looking for!
3 Healthy hair tips for blonde color treated hair
Tip 1: Keep it hydrated
It takes work to get the perfect color blonde, so during the summer months you want to take extra measures to ensure your hair stays hydrated. At our salon we have several products and treatments available. Just a few are our Redken Bonding concentrate shampoo and conditioner. It adds moisture and protein and is made for all hair types. Our Redken Color Extend Blondage system conditioner features citric acid to strengthen and repair blonde hair from the core and strengthens, moisturizes and detangles in one step. In addition we have Keratin Treatments that protects hair from damage, including breakage and split ends.
*Fun fact: Always wet your hair with fresh water before
exposure to chlorine. This step allows your hair to absorb more of the regular
water, leaving less room for chlorine infused water to infiltrate your strands
therefore helping to keep your hair from being stripped of moisture.
Tip 2: Protect it from the heat
Using a heat protectant before using your favorite styling tool would help your hair remain healthy, and lock in your hair color. A few we recommend are Redken’s Extreme Play Safe 3-in-1 leave in treatment and Redken Thermal Sprays Iron Shape 11 and 21. These are a must have for protecting hair from thermal heat and preventing damage.
Tip 3: Keep it out of the sun
Stay out of the sun- what? No way Jose’! It’s inevitable we are always outside and during the summer even more so, no fear we carry Pureology Color Fanatic Instant Deep Conditioning hair mask and Pureology Refresh and Go dry shampoo that contain a UV filter that keep your hair protected. Additionally, hats are a great way to keep your hair protected and it can keep you cooler too. Not to mention, insert happy dance, summer 2021 hats are in style, but if you’re not fond of bucket hats, brim hats or caps a sun umbrella is another option and hold on to your seat because the most fashionable headwear this summer is the headscarf!
*FUN FACTS: Properties
found in sesame oil have been shown
to protect scalp and hair from up to 30% of UV rays according to NCBI (National
Center for Biotechnology Information). Sesame oil resists 30% of UV rays, while
coconut oil, olive oil block out about 20%. Coconut oil protects hair from
protein loss. Some essential oils that contain a natural SPF: Peppermint
essential oil- SPF 7, Tea tree essential oil- SPF 2.

NOTE: You should always check with
your hair stylist when it comes to oils especially those with tints, and especially if you have white
or platinum blonde hair. Oils are good for you, however, it all comes down
to the formulation. For blondes any oil that isn’t water soluble should be
avoided.
HOT TIP: Apply oil to damp strands or dry ends prior to sun exposure. The summer heat leaves the cuticle open and more porous, so your hair will absorb the oil.
