Seven Different Hair Washing Mistakes by Stylist Jamie Nguyen

Don’t Make These 7 Hair Washing Mistakes!

You may be causing more harm than good.

Mistake #1 – You May Be Washing Too Often

For most people, there is no need to wash your hair daily. If you’re washing too often this can leave a drying effect on our scalp, causing it to produce even more oil. If you have fine and thin hair, it is best to wash your hair no more than every other day. If your hair is medium, thick, or normal, aim for washing approximately twice a week. A great option is to apply dry shampoo on the days in between washes to keep your strands looking, feeling, and smelling clean!

Mistake #2 – Not Detangling Before the Shower

Hair becomes more breakable and fragile when wet, so it is best to detangle it before you take a shower. Use a wet brush and gently work your way from your ends up to your roots to detangle. This step will make hair washing easier and less painful.

Mistake #3 – Using the Same Shampoo Every Time

Our hair needs change here and there, so why should we use the same shampoo? Seasons, lifestyle and hobbies can dictate these needs. For the colder, dryer months, your hair is going to crave a more moisturizing formula, whereas in the summer, you may need a lighter, refreshing one. If you are using a lot of styling products and do not wash your hair as often, you may want to get a clarifying shampoo to give it a deep clean.

Mistake #4 – Better Technique

Learning the correct way to shampoo your hair can help cut down on damage and also leave you with hair that looks and feels cleaner. Make sure your hair is thoroughly saturated with water to ensure an even shampoo application. Next, apply the shampoo directly to your palms and rub them together to create a light lather. Take your lathered palms and work them evenly through your hair, making sure to cover all areas of the hair and scalp. Always rinse and then repeat the process a second time. You want to avoid aggressive, circular motions as these can cause angles and breakage.

Mistake #5 – Skipping Your Scalp

A gentle massage with the pads of your fingers helps to remove stubborn buildup and promotes circulation, which is essential to healthy hair growth.

Mistake #6 – Using Too Much or Too Little Conditioner

Conditioner is a necessity for keeping our hair soft, shiny, and manageable. If using too little, it may be difficult to detangle. Using too much may have your hair feeling dirty or greasy. Most people really only need to apply it to the bottom of the hair shaft. If you are having trouble to apply an even application, try using a wide toothed comb to help distribute the conditioner through your hair.

Mistake #7 – Not Rinsing Completely

This mistake is a very super important one. If you do not rinse out all of the shampoo or conditioner, you will be left with dull, dirty-feeling hair. Be sure to avoid rinsing your hair with hot water. Not only does this open up the cuticle to damage and frizz, but it can also make your color fade even faster. Always rinse your hair with lukewarm water or cool water to help smooth down your cuticle and protect your hair color.
