Box Dye Just Say No by Cheryl Farman
Box dye! 😖 If we could take every box off of every shelf and replace it with our business card and somehow not land up in jail, believe me, we would! Now, I understand that not everyone has the means or even desire to see a stylist but let me give you a few reason why investing in a good stylist is 100% worth your time and money.
1. One size done NOT fit all. Box color is formulated so that everyone and anyone can use it, but not everyone’s hair type, texture or color is the same. In fact, most box dyes are formulated with maximum amounts of pigment and developer, so that it is able to work on most people. If you have already dyed your hair previously, your processed hair will not need that strong of a developer. Don’t damage it further by getting a one size fits all box color. See a stylist who will customize your formula according to your individual hair needs.
2. Most permanent box dye works through the use of ammonia. The corrosive nature of ammonia allows it to blast open your hair’s cuticle, allowing the new color particles to penetrate the hair, and irreversibly changing the hair’s pH to an undesirable level. When the hair’s cuticle has been blasted open that much it has a hard time closing back up. Think about it, an unclosed cuticle means major damage, split ends and an inability for the hair to lock in color which causes it to fade faster. And guess what? The more you use ammoniated color, the more your hair will fade, causing you to dye your hair more often, causing your hair and wallet distress.
3. Box dye is extremely difficult to remove. I can't tell you how many people contact me and want to go from jet black box dye to a gorgeous silvery blonde or reds to blonde. It's very difficult to do and I always tell people that it will be a process and investment to remove layers and layers of box dye. The hair is already compromised because of the ammonia and salts, and typically there are bands of inconsistent color that we are needing to fix. So, taking extreme caution with lightener is crucial when removing box dye and maintains the integrity of the hair. Remember, Just say no and call your stylist
